The Urban Redevelopment Authority completed the Telok Ayer Environmental Improvement Project in the last quarter of year 2000 that introduced pedestrian-friendly features to the existing roads. More specifically, the project includes widened and tiled terracotta walkways, addition of trees and more regularized parking for vehicles for the ease of both locals and tourists alike to explore Chinatown by foot.

After the completion, the improvement has received overwhelming positive feedbacks for the wider walking space, extra shade from the trees and significantly improved traffic conditions for the motorists. It also gives the entire Telok Ayer (Chinatown) Conservation Area as well as Stanley Street their potential and today, Stanley Street is home to beautifully restored shophouses with a multitude of modern uses sitting cheek by jowl with many of Singapore’s oldest landmarks.

The best example has got to be our triplets on 15, 16 and 17 Stanley Street where you can pamper yourself to a brand-new hairdo with Brush Hair Salon located on level 2 at 16 Stanley Street. You can also treat yourself to a gastronomical adventure with Catalan classics with Barcelona’s Michelin-starred Restaurant Gaig!

Soon, the dining scene in Stanley Street will be a little more exciting and fun once Laut Collective and Noa Coffee opens its doors. With their unique concept of being a cafe by day and a bar at night in the same space, they strive to create exceptional experiences within their respective fields of expertise – coffee and cocktails.

Join us to #RediscoverTelokAyer through artistic interventions! Rediscover: Telok Ayer is a project by LASALLE College of the Arts and Urban Redevelopment Authority which aims to provide the public with a variety of avenues to engage with and immerse themselves in the community memories of Telok Ayer that have been uncovered. Look out for the colourful artworks depicting imagery of the former coastline and echoes of immigrant narratives by a young budding artist Sarah Lin.
